Using collage and mixed media techniques I have been exploring new ways of upcycling old, unwanted books which would otherwise be discarded and pulped. Each artwork uses only the images found in one book. By carefully cutting out the illustrations, taking many hours with very sharp scissors and an artist's knife, I reassemble them in different layers. The resulting 3D artwork gives a sense of depth, reminding me of Victorian collectors and their glass cabinets filled with specimens. By using the book's front and back cover as a background and rolling some of the pages, I fix them in such a way that some of the original illustrations can still be seen. I use old vintage books, which would otherwise be thrown away. These books, and now 3D artworks, evoke feelings of nostalgia for a past childhood. I used to love looking at the illustrations which I found fascinating and inspiring. Being able to reinvent these old books is delightful.
