Verre Eglomise is a traditional craft involving precious metal leaf (imitation and real gold/silver) and glass. A French term meaning the process of applying/engraving a design and gilding to the reverse of a piece of glass. The name comes from the 18th century French decorator Jean-Baptiste Glomy (1711-1786) who was responsible for its revival. The technique dates back to pre-Roman times and has been used throughout Europe since the 15th century.
The result of gilding gold or silver leaf to the back of glass is a mirror-like, gentle reflective surface that produces rich, beautiful pieces of artwork. My use of this technique enables me to use illustrative techniques that I love, especially Arthur Rackham and his contemporaries. The resulting artwork harks back to the black/white pen and line illustrations of children's books from the Victorian era.
